Notice: Winter Weather is on the Way – Please Clear Snow and Ice off of Sidewalks and Curb Ramps!
The Minnesota State Council on Disability wants to remind everyone to PLEASE KEEP YOUR SIDEWALKS AND CURB RAMPS CLEAR OF SNOW AND ICE. The sidewalks are a lifeline for many people with disabilities and our senior community. When the sidewalk and curb ramps are not cleared off, they can become impassable and present a dangerous situation for those who are trying to get to work, the grocery store, or medical appointments.
In most communities there are local ordinances that require snow removal on public sidewalks within a given period of time. Fines may result if residences and business owners do not abide by those ordinances. Do the right thing and shovel your sidewalk as soon as possible. DON’T WAIT FOR THE SNOW TO MELT! This could be a matter of life or death for someone if they are forced into the street to get to their destination. Contact your local city hall for more information on snow removal ordinances.
Last winter, Joan Willshire, Executive Director of MSCOD, had a nightmare experience getting stuck in the snow using her scooter.
