State of Minnesota Proclamation
WHEREAS: Minnesota Inclusive Higher Education Consortium is designating May 1, 2023, as Inclusive Postsecondary Education Day; and
WHEREAS: Inclusive postsecondary education is college that includes people with intellectual disabilities; and
WHEREAS: College students with and without an intellectual disability can go to college together. All students learn more academically and socially when taught together in inclusive classrooms; and
WHEREAS: Students with intellectual disabilities who attend INCLUSIVE postsecondary education are more likely to have competitive jobs after college; and
WHEREAS: Today, there are about 5,300 colleges and universities in the U.S., and just over 300 have options for students with intellectual disabilities; and
WHEREAS: Today, there are nearly 200 colleges and universities in Minnesota, and 4 have options for students with intellectual disabilities with enrollment capacity for less than 3% of college-age Minnesotans with an intellectual disability; and
WHEREAS: Minnesota students, families, and educators join with universities, colleges, and communities around the county in celebrating Inclusive Postsecondary Education day.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, TIM WALZ, Governor of Minnesota, do hereby proclaim Monday, May 1, 2023, as: INCLUSIVE POSTSECONDARY EDUCATION DAY in the State of Minnesota.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the State of Minnesota to be affixed at the State Capitol this 27th day of April.
