December 3 is International Day of Persons with Disabilities. In 2019, it was stated that the United Nations should lead by example and raise the standards on disability inclusion. International Day of Persons with Disabilities promotes the rights and well-being of people with disabilities in all aspects of life. It’s also a day to reflect on the progress made in all areas of society.
Folks with disabilities are entitled to the right to participate fully in their communities, in the way they want to, without being burdened by barriers. Over one billion people in the world have disabilities, which represents 16% of the population.
- Of these one billion people, 80% live in developing countries.
- An estimated 46% of older people ages 60 years and over are people with disabilities.
- One in every five women is likely to experience a disability.
- One in every ten children is a child with a disability.
- People with disabilities face many health inequities.
Some ways to participate in International Day of Persons with Disabilities are to raise awareness of disability-inclusive practices, highlight achievements of persons with disabilities, promote inclusion and accessibility, and consult with representatives and organizations to inform and educate about disability rights. There are many other ways to celebrate.
An inclusive world means more representation, diversity, and freedom for folks with disabilities. At every level, we can all do more to encourage and engage in a world that is more inclusive. Remember that knowledge is power. Be sure to educate yourself on your rights and protections as a person with a disability.
As we continue to strive to make the world more inclusive, continuing to let our voices be heard and raising awareness is essential. We must remain united in the pursuit of fighting for the rights and inclusion of people with disabilities.
