October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), a time to recognize and celebrate the important contributions of workers with disabilities in America. This year’s theme is “Access to Good Jobs for All.”
The origins of NDEAM stretch back to 1945, when Congress declared the first week of October as “National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week.” Initially, this recognition came in the wake of World War II when many veterans returned with disabilities and were seeking employment. In 1962, the word “physically” was removed from the title to recognize the contributions of people with all types of disabilities. Then, in 1988, October was officially named National Disability Employment Awareness Month, providing a broader platform to promote workplace inclusion through equal opportunities, accommodations, and a supportive environment.
Over the years, NDEAM has grown into a significant movement. Every October, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) leads campaigns, hosts events, and shares resources to highlight the value of inclusive employment. Using these resources, we encourage employers to
- Evaluate their hiring practices for accessibility.
- Implement inclusive workplace policies, like providing reasonable accommodations.
- Conduct accessibility training for existing employees.
NDEAM actively fosters an inclusive workforce and promotes quality work opportunities for people with disabilities. By breaking down barriers and challenging stereotypes, we can create workplaces that value diversity, equality, and the contributions of all employees.
